At the Xbox E3 2016 Briefing Event, Microsoft unveiled a lot of new advancements to the Xbox line, but it was their next-generation gaming console that stole the show. The company has named their new console Project Scorpio and have stated that it will be, “the most powerful console ever created.” That is a bold claim to make in the ever evolving console market.

Project Scorpio will pack an 8-core CPU (the manufacture has not yet been released), a graphics card with 6 teraflops, and 320/GB of memory bandwidth. The console’s graphics upgrade is comparable with the NVidia GeForce GTX 1070, which has 6.5 teraflops of performance. To put that in perspective, Scorpio will be five times more powerful than the original Xbox One. That is a massive jump in performance and to us it seems like the company is attempting to make a play (no pun intended) for the PC gaming market.

Additionally, Project Scorpio will be capable of playing games in 4K resolutions at 60Hz. With 4K TVs coming down in price, this will appeal a lot to consumers looking to future proof their gaming console purchases. Also, Microsoft will be offering  high fidelity virtual reality, which has been increasing in popularity over the last year.

Unfortunately, as of today, the Xbox Team has not released pricing for Project Scorpio, but has stated that next-gen console will be backwards compatible with Xbox One games. This is one area that hurt them when they released Xbox One, so they are learning from their mistakes. Microsoft has also said that Scorpio will not be replacing the Xbox One and Xbox One Slim, but will be an addition to their family of consoles.

Currently, Project Scorpio is slated for launch during the 2017 holiday season.  It seems that the 2017 holiday season is already shaping up to be a good one.

  1. Hey shawn, a few sites have stated that Project Scorpio is able to play games at 4K, but many more sites state that it will struggle to hit 4K, even at 30 FPS. I just wanted to say that you might want to edit “Project Scorpio will be capable of playing games in 4K resolutions at 60Hz” to “Project Scorpio promises be capable of playing games in 4K resolutions at 60Hz”. Just a slight edit that might make a difference for you.

    1. Thanks, Cole. I pulled that info from Microsoft. Did they change that? Appreciate the feedback.
